The popular industry forum for Domestic Energy Assessors (DEAs) run by Asset Skills - the organisation responsible for developing the National Occupational Standards (NOS) and qualifications for DEAs - mysteriously closed its doors a couple of days ago, without explanation.

Prompted by two emails from forum members who asked if I knew anything, I got on the blower to Tom Orton - forum moderator and employee at Asset Skills - to find out why.

Tom basically told me their work on the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) was drawing to a close in about three weeks time. Meaning the forum had served its purpose, for the time being at least (he hinted that further work may still need to be done in the future).

I disagreed, citing the forum as a useful source for feedback and news for both DEAs and Asset Skills, from which can be drawn useful information and opinions which can help shape their future work.

He agreed.

In fact, Tom is as sad to see its demise as others clearly are too.

All may not be lost

Asset Skills have other forums connected with the property sector and it has been suggested that, if the demand was there, maybe the old forum could be integrated and to benefit from the "cross-pollination" of expert advice and information from all sides of the industry.

The forum at energy-assessors.org.uk was unique insofar as it was independent of industry and Government - Yet still influential to both parties... Hence why I believed it should come back.

If you are a former member of the forum and find yourself slipping into a deep state of depression because of its absence, you must immediately get in touch with Asset Skills now and cry loudly down the phone.

It is far better for the industry as a whole to have it, than not - If you want it back, cry like an unfed baby!
