IES Sketch it up with Google Sketchup
I wondered how long it would take for someone to do something like this: Integrated Environmental Solutions Ltd (IES) has unveiled a new plug-in for Google SketchUp.
In case you don't know anything about Google's freely available desktop program, this is how they describe it:
Google SketchUp is software that you can use to create, modify and share 3D models. It's easier to learn than other 3D modeling programs, which is why so many people are already using it.
Google allows third-party developers to create "niche-centric" plug-ins for the application which is exactly what IES has done, with help from Google itself.
Overview of the IES VE SketchUp plug-in
Whilst the plug-in focuses on non-domestic (energy conservation) Building Regulations - including Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) - I've been informed that future releases will accommodate domestic EPCs too.
The IES VE SketchUp plug-in links the 3D design capabilities of SketchUp to their current crop of analysis tools: VE-Ware, VE-Toolkits and the full <Virtual Environment>.
UK & Northern Ireland compliance
The software is Government-approved for showing compliance with UK and Northern Ireland requirements, including:
- England & Wales Part L2A (non-dwellings – SBEM & DSM)
- N. Ireland Part F (non-dwellings – SBEM & DSM)
- England & Wales and N. Ireland EPCs (non-dwellings – SBEM & DSM)
- Scotland Section 6, including EPCs (non-dwellings – SBEM & DSM)
- Eire Part L (non-dwellings – SBEM/NEAP*)
- Eire BERs (non-dwellings – SBEM/NEAP*)
Second Life
I wonder when we'll see developments within Second Life? I can certainly see opportunities for creating CPD course content in there, as just one example.
