The milk of human kindness
As some of you may - or may not - know, I've been a moderator on a close-knit web development forum for several years.
Yesterday, one of the members began a thread entitled: "A year ago today". It was to... well, I'll let the member tell the story himself:
A year ago today...
I collapsed in someone else's bedroom. Couldn't move, couldn't talk, couldn't think. Next thing I knew I was in hospital... for nearly six months!
I can now walk, talk, type and draw again (see phudge.com), plus most other things normal people can do. I'm hoping to return to work next month, although we'll have to see how that goes. Running Rogue is not a part time job!
I'm sure my progress wouldn't be possible without the fantastic support you all gave me. The buckets of cards and emails, the cash I spent on a Wii, and of course the lovely letters from Mr Y and co. It was strange to think that people I've never met, could be better to me than some of the 'friends' I've known for years; who didn't even bother to come and see me.
I've said it before, but thank you all so much. You'll never realise how just being part of an online forum, with people that cared enough to write, really made a difference in the darkest days. A couple of times I nearly died (I won't go into details but involved blood clots where they're not supposed to be), and I like to think having you guys here helped get me through. You gave that extra boost when it counted most.
Well, I won't take up any of your time. You've got Kim to wish happy birthday to (HBK!).
Suffice to say, I'll be here for a long time yet. And in that respect, you've done yourselves no favours.
Dry your eyes
Powerful stuff!
Just shows you: forums don't have to be places to abuse people. Keep going, Richard.
That is all.
