Definitive CPD Guide for DEAs and Training Providers

Mock CPD certificate

Domestic Energy Assessor (DEA) accreditation schemes have different approaches to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) - or Lifelong Learning (LLL) - requirements.

Here, DEAs and CPD/LLL training providers alike, can hear (or read in the case of the shy!) the definitive CPD/LLL requirements of each accreditation scheme in one place.

DEA accreditation scheme requirements

NHER
10 (rec) No SAVA/NHER CPD

RICS

Elmhurst Text only (see link) 10 No Elmhurst CPD
ECMK Text only (see link) 16 Yes ECMK CPD

I'd like to extend a big thanks to all participating accreditation schemes for their time and help in collectively clarifying a previously confusing topic amongst DEAs and CPD training providers.

It is important the appropriate DEAs, perform the appropriate CPD courses, from the appropriate training providers, if disputes are to be avoided in this first critical year of the industry.

It's all very well saying we have to attend courses in order to keep up our CPD requirements, but not everyone is doing enough work to even cover the fees to be accredited let alone making enough money to pay for the, what seem to be, very overpriced one day courses. I could be wrong and there may be courses that are free or at least reasonable but I don't know where, so if anyone else does please say.

We offer 5 hour courses which (correct me if I am wrong) can contribute to your CPD as long as it is mentioned in your personal development plan. Course cost £100 + VAT. Please visit www.wcea.org.uk or email training@wcea.org.uk for details.

Will somebody please design CPD which teaches something new (not already covered in training) - I fail to see why we should have to pay for CPD which refreshes what we have already been taught. Refreshing subjects is ok if you have forgotten what you have been taught but its a bit pointless otherwise. If this is lifelong learning teach something new - let us (DEA's) learn at home by supplying us with useful on-line information at no cost - my god we need to do something with all this free time!

Understanding Thatch Courses
Reply #10 on : Wed December 17, 2008, 10:07:34
I am a Home Inspector and a retired Master Thatcher and I run the only comprehensive courses about Thatch in the country, both in Devon and around the country for the Association of Building Engineers. I belong to both the National Society of Master Thatchers and the Devon and Cornwall Association of Master Thatchers.

Who have attended - Building Inspectors, Home Inspectors, Conservation Officers, Building Surveyors, DEA's, Architects, Estate Agents, Loss Adjusters and Home Owners. It is also suitable for On Construction DEA's.

The 2 courses that I run are:-
1) An Introduction to Thatch and EPC's. This is a 3 hour powerpoint course that includes; thatching methods, materials, styles, coatwork and ridges, roof construction - old and new, factors affecting the life of a thatched roof, fire prevention, identification of thatch types and EPC's & RdSAP for thatch. CPD - 3 hours. Cost £100
2) Defects in Thatch and Condition Rating of Thatched Roofs for a Home Condition Report or Home Condition Survey. This follows on from the first course and is ideal for HI's, Building Surveyors, Building Inspectors and other building professionals. It covers all items in an HCR that come into contact with a thatched roof and includes:- chimneys, common defects in thatched roofs, windows, roof frame, electrics, fire, birds and animals and gutters. CPD - 3 hours
Cost £160 for the whole day.
Very comprehensive course notes are provided.

Please see my website for more information.

Ash,

there are many different things which can help you assess the age of a property, these should have been shown to you on your course. there is also a book called - inspections and reports on dwellings, assessing age - by Ian A Melville and Ian A Gordon, ISBN 0 7282 0447 9

hope this helps,

Heating controls CPD
Reply #14 on : Thu April 02, 2009, 19:29:16
I have recently qualified and was suprised to see a number of delegates on my course had very little experience of heating. I have spent 30 years in the heating industry and I have started to prepare with a world leading control manufacture of thermostatic radiator valves, times controls and thermostats a CPD programme. If you are interested I would welcome your feed back. I can also support with renewable energy training (solar thermal and wind turbine) Please ask for assisitance.

Why do the accreditation body have to have their own CPD RULES/GUIDELINES? Surely ABBE should clearly define industry wide guidelines that would help Energy Assessors to avoid being held to ransom by their Accreditation bodies by insisting that all CPD must be obtained through the use of exhorbitent in-house course/events.

EPC software
Reply #16 on : Wed May 20, 2009, 13:45:22
Hello,

I have a couple of questions - sorry if this is not the right place!

Who are the major providers of software for EPCs - do all accreditation agencies offer the software or is it only a couple of companies like NHER?

Does anyone know which is the best currently or if there are any major differences between them?

I am looking at DEA training and it is difficult to get a sense of what distinguishes the different accreditation bodies...

Thank you very much!

The Dreams Of being a DEA.
Reply #17 on : Wed July 08, 2009, 07:47:44
It's a farce. I did the Level 3 Dip in time for the introduction of EPCs in Scotland. In the Rigmaden ad it says there will be thousands of EPCs to be issued. Once the coarse had started did we find out that DEAs can only do rental properties and not ones for sale (this was found out by my own investigations and notvolunteered by the training provider. I persevered then after I had passed and paid for all the equipment required, advertising and accreditation I sat and waited for the thousands of jobs to come rolling in. You've guessed it, it didn't happen. I then found that the enforcing authorities weren't enforcing at all. In fact it's only if a prospective tennant complains that no EPC is available is any action taken. This action is taken by trading standards. If a prospective tennant does not request to see an EPC then the enforcing authority is none th wiser. I'm afraid I've wasted over £3'000 on apipe dream. Fortunately I didn't give up the day job.

what i cant understand is we pay so much money in tution fees to become DEA and then EPC's are priced at £15-00 by Estate Agents
what a CHEAP earning career.
why cant there be a standard fee for EPC's for DEA to charge,it will be better than being paid £15-00 per EPC

i can see the epc being downgraded and given to the energy providers ie gas board elec board many now offer a free epc online and any muppet can enter the property details and get a pretty accurate sap rating we all now the epc is based on assumptions dosnt take into consideration things we use everyday ie cooker fridge washing machine etc what a complete load of balls this is ---jobs for the boys --but i am one of the boys
